Alcuni li collegano a sintetizzatori ma non ho mai sentito niente di bello come risultato, quindi non mi intriga molto.	No, because I’ve got these devices for years, I’m used to them. And there are only a few sounds that I care to get from the guitar. Someone connect them to the synthesizers, but I’ve never heard anything beautiful as a result, so it doesn’t intrigue me much.

Secondo te, come dovrebbe essere ristrutturato il mondo degli affari discografici?	How do you think the world of record companies should be restructured?
So di certo che dovrebbe essere ristrutturato, ma non ho preparato nessun piano d’azione. Ora come ora, è piuttosto schifoso; ma poi bisogna considerare che gli affari, in generale, mancano di ogni tipo di integrità o scrupoli, per cui gli affari e la musica è come gli affari e il petrolio, o le scarpe… sono tutti imbroglioni.	I know for sure that it should be restructured, but I haven’t prepared any action plan. Right now, it’s pretty disgusting; but we must also consider that business, in general, lacks any kind of integrity or scruple, so music business is like oil business or the shoes one… they’re all cheaters.

Pensi che gli affaristi del mondo musicale hanno un genuino interesse per la musica o vogliono solo i soldi?	Do you think that the businessmen in the musical world have a genuine interest in music or are they just looking for money?
Se ne fregano. Non ho mai visto nessuno in una posizione dirigenziale che non se ne fregasse della musica. Tutti loro odiano la musica e, peggio che mai, odiano i musicisti. Che ti dicano l’opposto e che ti trattino bene a una festa non vuole dire niente, in realtà ti odiano.	They don’t care. I’ve never seen anyone in a managerial position who cared about music. All of them hate music and, what’s worse, they hate musicians. The fact that they say the opposite and that they treat you kindly during a party doesn’t mean anything, they actually hate you.

Dato che la gente non si affida al proprio gusto nel comprare un disco ma piuttosto al risultato della massiccia manipolazione promozionale in radio e TV, non credi che varrebbe la pena promuovere musica migliore, visto che tanto la gente la comprerebbe lo stesso? No, secondo me, la gente ha il diritto di ascoltare la musica che gradisce al di là della sua eventuale validità, ma il problema dei mass media è che esaltano l’ignoranza al massimo grado, e l’unico simbolo indicante qualità oggi è il numero di copie vendute. Ma se sei davvero curioso di sapere dov’è la musica, devi uscire e cercarla, devi sapere che ciò che senti alla radio è solo la parte emergente di un enorme iceberg, c’è moltissima altra roba a disposizione, ma solo certi negozi di dischi la tengono in catalogo e te la devi trovare per conto tuo. Ma la maggior parte della gente è troppo pigra per fare così, per cui se ne va tutto al diavolo.	No, I think people have the right to listen to the music they like independently of its value, but the problem of mass media is that they glorify ignorance to the highest degree, and nowadays the only symbol indicating quality is the number of units sold. But if you’re really curious to know where the music stands, you have to go out and look for it, you have to know that what you hear on the radio is just the emerging part of a huge iceberg, there’s plenty of other stuff available, but only few record stores keep it in their catalogs and you have to find it by yourself. But most people are too lazy to do so, therefore everything goes to hell.

Ti piacciono i film di Steven Spielberg?	Do you like Steven Spielberg’s movies?
No, specialmente le luci, le trovo rivoltanti, e i valori espressi nei film sono così depressivamente sub-urbani. Ma quelli di Indiana Jones mi piacciono molto. Mi sto preparando a farne uno, spero nelle prossime sei settimane.	I’m getting ready to do one, I hope in the next six weeks.

Ti piace MTV?	Do you like MTV?
No, ma il mio video parlerà di ciò che si vede su MTV. Il nome della canzone è “Vieni nel mio video” ▲ e parla di tutte le stupidaggini che si vedono di continuo sugli altri video, tutto ciò sarà nel mio video, solo fatto in maniera molto morbosa. Andrò a San Francisco sabato per assistere all’esecuzione di un mio brano di musica da camera, poi farò le cose già dette, poi a metà luglio sarà eseguita la mia musica per balletto a Berkeley.	On Saturday I’ll go to San Francisco to attend the performance of one of my chamber music pieces, then I’ll do the things I’ve said before, then in mid-July my ballet music will be performed at Berkeley.

No, questa va al di là del corpo umano. There are 40 puppets operated by 10 dancers, three of the pieces will be premiered in US, another will be premiered in the world. The sequence of the show is “Bob in Dacron & Sad Jane”, “Mo and Herb’s vacation”, “Sinister footwear”, “Pedro’s dowry”.

Quanto materiale musicale hai in magazzino che aspetta di venire tramutato in disco?	How much musical material do you have in the stock waiting to be turned into records?

No, è meglio accantonato che buttato via. Almeno è tutto registrato e non se n’è tutto andato per aria.	No, it’s better to set it aside than to throw it away. At least everything is recorded and it isn’t gone forever.

Ora che i tuoi figli sono cresciuti, ti influenzano in qualche modo?	Now that your children have grown up, do they influence you in any way?
Non hanno molta influenza su di me. Ho fatto “Ragazza della Valle” con Moon ma lei non è molto interessata alla musica. Potrei lavorare con Dweezil, visto che è un chitarrista.	They don’t have much influence on me. I did “Valley girl” with Moon but she isn’t really interested in music. I could work with Dweezil, as he’s a guitarist.

Sarebbe nel tuo gruppo?	Will he be in your group?
No, gli piace l’heavy metal.	No, he likes heavy metal.

E a te piace l’heavy metal?	And do you like heavy metal?
Beh, qualcosa non è male. Mi piacciono i Van Halen, Rats e mi piacevano molto i primi dischi dei Black Sabbath.	Well, something is not bad. I like Van Halen, Rats and I really liked the first Black Sabbath records.

Progetti per una tournée in Italia?	Any plans for a tour in Italy?
Se n’è discusso, ma il problema di una tournée in Italia è che non si può fare affidamento sui promotori. Sono in corso esperienze antipatiche. Se potessimo trovare qualcuno che ci pagasse la somma dovuta a tempo dovuto, allora sì, in Italia ci andremmo, perché suonare in Italia mi piace più che in ogni altro Paese al mondo. Il problema sta proprio nella scarsa affidabilità degli organizzatori, il che non è poco. Comunque, vedrò se si può concludere qualche cosa.	We discussed it, but the problem of touring in Italy is that you cannot rely on the promoters. Unpleasant experiences are ongoing. If we could find someone who will pay us the due amount in the due time, then we would come to Italy, yes, because I like to play in Italy more than in any other country in the world. The problem lies in the lack of reliability of the organizers, which is not a small issue. Anyway, I’ll see if anything can be done.
